Galen Terrace Tenant Association 1649 W. Street, S.E. Washington, D.C. 20020 galenterrace.org
Galen Terrace was acquired by Somerset, NHT and the Tenant Association in 2006, and renovated completely in 2007, including a new community center and computer lab which serves as a locus for the provision of community services. The owners, including the Galen Terrace Tenant Association, oversee the Galen Terrace resident services programs through a Board consisting of three residents and two representatives of the development team. A Tenant Services Fund, established as part of the redevelopment of the property, and with on-going contribution from property cash flow assures program continuity.
Galen runs an on-site after-school program for 30 youth between the ages of 5 and 13. The program provides academic enrichment and encourages greater parent participation. The program features STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) instruction with funding from the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation (CYITC) and the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project. A summer camp works to prevent summer learning loss.
Galen Terrace is partnering with TD Bank, which is sponsoring a summer reading and savings program for the youth enrolled in summer camp; and have donated back –to- school supplies. The partnership with TD Bank provides Galen Terrace youth with an added incentive for reading books during the summer, by rewarding children who read 10 books during the summer with a $10 deposit for a TD Bank “Young Saver” account.
